It has been shown that users typically choose passwords (or pass phrases) that are easily remembered, as well as easily recovered, to protect cipher keys. Backup files of cryptographic keys serve as an attractive target for hackers since they are usually unattended. Many people simply overlook the process of creating a backup file for their cryptographic keys and when these keys are damaged or lost, they must generate and distribute new keys which can be costly and provide opportunities for unintended disclosure.;This dissertation describes techniques that could be used to solve some of the problems associated with security of cryptographic keys. First, a taxonomic scheme was developed which can be used to describe a biometric cipher key. Secondly, a novel cipher key using biometric features was devised that cannot be lost, stolen, or forgotten using biometric features.
